Today I will be talking about Warwick's, a great bookstore located in La Jolla which I visited on my recent California vacation. It has been open since 1896 and is the country's oldest family-owned and operated bookstore. This bookstore doesn't just sell books; they sell stationery, office supplies, jewelry, cards and art supplies! You will know you are in the right place when you spot the giant playable wooden chess set that attracts lots of customers.
Kid's Section:
The kids and young adult section, in the back right corner, has a few cute and comfy chairs, a table of stuffed animals and board books and a wall of stickers for sale. There are categories such as "Mystery" and "Fantasy". It is also organized by little kids, young readers and young adult. There are also handmade signs that say "If you liked this book, you may like this..." which I think is helpful.
Other Things They Sell:
Like I mentioned before this bookstore sells lots of things other than books! The jewelry and prints they sell are from artists worldwide, which is very cool. They even have one or two aisles dedicated to selling cards, napkins and other party supplies. There are seasonal sections, like for Christmas, and home decorations, too. They also sell pins and cute vinyl stickers at the register (I got two). They also sell a kid's book of the month subscription and they mail it to you which I think is a very nice idea.
Nearby:
There are also lots of fun places to go to that are close by if you want. On that same street, there is a nice coffee shop, Peet's Coffee along with a toy store and novelty candy shop. The candy shop, Balboa Candy, is famous for its huge selection of saltwater taffy along with fudge and other sweets.
Little Things I Would Change:
One thing I would change is to add more cozy chairs to the space to encourage more book lovers to stay and relax. A second thing that would be nice is if there was more space to add a small cafe or snack bar. Otherwise, this is one of my favorite bookstores I have ever been to and I would love to go back lots and lots of times.
You should check it out too!
Thank you for reading this and I hope you check Warwick's out!
Until next time,
Kat
